Citrus Commons Former Headquarter of Sunkist Building Designated Historic-Cultural Landmark

SHERMAN OAKS, CA. February 26, 2026

IMT Residential announces the iconic brutalist style building at Citrus Commons has been officially designated a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument following the approval announcement on February 25, 2026. The designation recognizes the building’s architectural significance and its historic role in Southern California’s citrus industry.

The building’s landmark designation acknowledges not only its architectural pedigree but also IMT Residential’s ongoing commitment to preservation. The site received an approved Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) in 2019, paving the way for a rehabilitation of the original structure and the addition of new mixed-use development.

Originally constructed between 1970 and 1971, the well-known building served as the headquarters of Sunkist Growers, Inc. The historic agricultural cooperative was founded in 1893 and played a major role in shaping Southern California’s economic landscape. Designed by the renowned architectural firm A.C. Martin and Associates, the building stands as a hallmark of Brutalist architecture. The building was conceptualized as an inverted pyramid to meet Sunkist’s operational needs and shield the structure from harsh summer sun.

“We are honored to see the former headquarter of Sunkist building formally recognized as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument,” said Joseph Elhabr, Vice President at IMT Residential. “This designation affirms the importance of preserving architectural history while adapting landmark structures for modern use. Citrus Commons is a testament to our commitment to honoring the past while reimagining iconic sites for future generations.”

The Historic-Cultural Monument designation reinforces City of Los Angeles preservation priorities and identifies Citrus Commons as a cultural asset. It also serves as an enduring reminder of California’s citrus heritage, Brutalist architectural innovation, and IMT Residential’s commitment to innovation.
